So. I am graduating on May 8th with the rest of the College of Fine Arts at the University of Utah. My degree will be in Art History. Which is wonderful, right? Wrong. I love school. I love learning. I'm good at it. It adds meaning and purpose to my life. I found the thing I'm passionate about and I get to talk about it, study it, read about it, write about, argue about it every Monday through Thursday with other people that love art. So why on EARTH is it a good thing that I'm leaving that behind? I'm trying to prepare myself for what I know will be a huge void when I wake up on May 9th, but I just can't seem to figure out how.
But here's what I've come up with:
~ I will go to graduate school eventually ($$$$$)
~ I will have time to work on BEING creative myself, not just studying other people's creations
~ I have about 2.3 bazillion books I want to read
~ I need to subscribe to podcasts, magazines, and blogs about art
Plus, I'm grateful. I know that 95% of students don't enjoy their education like I have.
And (obviously) I'm not leaving empty-handed. I feel like a convert to modernism, to postmodernism, to the language of images, to the history of visual culture, to looking, to seeing. Maybe that's a bit melodramatic, but it's honest.
Wish me luck as I reluctantly enter the world of working adults.
it has taken me almost two years to adjust to the world of working adults since leaving school. and i still get a little nostalgic whenever i walk on a campus, and i still think about going back to school, but there are so many things i love about not being in school. many of them are the things you listed. it's a give and take, i guess. (is this a total downer comment? sorry!) but congratulations on graduating! Oh, and thank you for sending me to Feed Your Soul. I got some awesome free downloads.
Congratulations!!! That is a huge accomplishment! I also get a little nostalgic for school sometimes too but I do also like to work on my own projects rather than school projects. I certainly hope to see some of your cool creations in the coming year! =)
